    According to archaeologists, the area of Ptolemaida has been inhabited since 6.000 BC. In the Paleontological Historical Museum of Ptolemaida, bones and tusks from elephants, fossils of insects, plants etc. are exhibited. A gold necklace dating back to around 4.500 BC was also found in the area.

    Philip II and Alexander the Great ensured that the entire area of Eordaia was assimilated into the state of the ancient Macedonians.

    In 337 BC, Ptolemeos was born in Eordaia, Macedonia, classmate and general of Alexander the Great and student of Aristotle. Ptolemaida got her name from him.
