    In 500 b.c Greek civilization adopted direct democracy, which is a system of goverment in which an assembly of ordinary citizens makes decisions. They also had a jury, a panel of citixens who make judgements in a trial.

    Magna Carta
    In 1215 English nobles forced Englands King John to sign the Magna Carta, this in latin means Great Charter. It was the first document to place restrictions on English Kings power. It limited taxes, it gaves to the people like own private property and trial by Jury

    English Bill of Rights
    In 1688 the Bill of Rights was created.
    Bill of Right is a written list of freedoms that a government promises to protect. It restated many of the traditional rights from the Magna Carta. But it also upheld habeas corpus which is a principle that a person cannot be held in prison without being charged with a specific crime.

    Chinese Exploration

    In 1405
    The Chinese Emperor sent Zheng He to explore the world. For 28 years, Zheng made seven voyages through the South China Sea and across the Indian Ocean. The Fleet was destroyed after Zheng death.

    To share trading routes to Asia countries had to find new routes to Asia. Prince Henry of Portugal opened a school of sailing. Cartographers produced more accurate maps and sea charts. Their were new and faster sailing ships. Vasco de Gama was a proguguese explor who found new routes to Asia

    In 1492 and Italian sailor named Christopher Columbus convince the spanish to invest money on his voyage to find a shorter route to Asia. On October 12 landed on the Bahamas where he met Tanios. He returned to Spain with gold for the King and Queen.

    Disease

    Europeons brought diseases like small pox and influenza to Native Americans. This made them vunerable, almost 90 percent of them died of these diseases. The Native Americans decreased populations and europeons easily comquered them.

    The Spanish enslaved Native Americans to work in gold and silver mines and plantations. A plantation is a large estate farmed by many workers. Bartolome de las Casas suggested to bring Africans to work as well. Slavery had already existed through out the world and even Africa it's sel. In America a harsher system of slavery developed over time.

    Capitalism is an economic system in which people put money, or capital, into a buisnesss, in order to make Profit. Merchants developed new ways to increase their profit. This system also decreased the risk of loss if an investment failed. Banks loaned investers and would want interest back, which is a percentage added to the original amount.

    Monarchs supported Mercantilism which is an economicpolicy which held that a nations wealth was measured by its supply of gold and silver. this was a cheap source of raw materials that might hove imported from other lands.

    Seeing Spain grow rich, Europpeans powers wanted their own colonies in the Americas. While Spain and Portugal claimed mexico Europe went farther North. Their gal was to find the Northwest, or a water route through or arond North America.

    Jametown Colony

    In 1606 King James of England granted a group of investors, known as the Virginia Colony, a charter to set up a colony in North America and find gold and silver. A charter is an official document that gives certain rights to an individual or group. Jamestown had struggles to survive, they ran out of food, and malaria spread. John Smith took over and began making food and saling tobacco. They also made up a representative government.

    Plymouth

    In 1620 a group of pilgrims and English Protestants, who wanted to separate from the Church of England, sailed for North America. In November 11, 1620 41 passengers agreed on a set of rules called the Mayflower Compact. This was a promise to obey the just and equal Laws to be made under their government. Half of the colonist died during the winter, but with the help of the Native Americans they were able to survive.

    The MIddle Colonies were New york, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The Dutch found New York, and New Jersey split of from that. William Penn founded the colony of Pennsylvania, later Delaware split off from Pennslyvania. Middle colonies had milder climate, and longer growing season. They were known to develop a variety of crafts and industries.

    The southern colonies consist of Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Geogia. in 1634 Maryland was established, 1712 South and North Carolina was established, Geogia was the last colony to be established in 1733. The South had the warmesty climate and mild winter, they decided to make plantations along the coast were the land was richest. Slavery was big in the South and more harsh to those who were enslaved.

    The Colombian Exchange occured after Columbus exploration, it opened a new era of global connections. Animals, plants and Ideas passed back and forth across the Atlantic.

    American crops were brought to the rest of the world like; potatoes, corn, tomatoes, beans, squash, peanuts, and pineapples. Native Americans also tought Europeons new skills , such as how to make medicines from tree barks and herbs. Europeons brought chickens, pigs, cattle, and horses. Also new religons and new organizing governments.

    The English Colonies include Massachusetts, Rhode Island New Hampshire, and Connecticut
    Purtians (English protestants) founded Massachusetts, Roger Williams founded Rhode Island. Thomas hooker founded Connecticut, and settlers seeking fertile land founded New Hampshire. New England had a harsh climate with short growing season, so they earned money by making ships and selling products from the forest and sea.

    Religous Freedom
    Pilgrims were the first of many English settlers who came to North America to worship their own gods. Religous Freedom is the right of all indivduals to follow their own religous beliefs. As time passed more people in the colonies came to believe that the government shouldn't interfer with religon. Freedom of religons became one of the cornerstones of American democracy.
