  • Assassination of Francis Ferdinand

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were shot to death by a Bosnian Serb nationalist. During an official visit to the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. This action was labeled as the outbreak to ww1. Austria-Hungary blamed the Serbian government immediately for the attack.Austria declared war on Serbia on July 28th.
  • Austria Declares war

    On July 28th,1914 one month after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and his wife, killed by a Serbian nationalist Austrian-Hungary declared war on Serbia. It effectively began the first World War. Austria was forced to retreat after 4 days of battle.
  • Britain Declares War on Germany

    Britain declared war on Germany on August 4th 1914, but the rivalry between the two countries had been growing for years. Germany resented Britain’s control of the world’s oceans and markets, while Britain increasingly viewed a Europe dominated by a powerful and aggressive Germany as a threat which they wanted to contain. Also they joined it to Protect France.
  • Austria Invades Russia

    The Eastern Front was a ‘war of movement’ where the Central Powers had over 2.5 million troops, faced a much larger force of 4 million Russians. . By the end of World War I, four empires had collapsed, including both the Russian and the Austro-Hungarian Empires, and a new world order followed.
  • Battle Of Verdun

    It was one of the longest, bloodiest, and most-ferocious battles of the war; French casualties amounted to about 400,000, German ones to about 350,000. Some 300,000 were killed. It was the longest battle lasting from feb 21st - Dec 1916. It was a victory for the French.
  • Second Battle of Aisne

    The British expeditionary force and french army fought the western german army. Was a hugely costly attack ultimately involving 1.2 million troops and 7,000 guns. It achieved little in the way of territorial gain. The French won the war and captured the village.
  • Second Battle of Marne

    On July 15, 1918, near the Marne River in the Champagne region of France, the Germans begin what would be their final offensive push of World War I. Dubbed the Second Battle of the Marne, the conflict ended several days later in a major victory for the Allies.
  • Battle of Chateau Thierry

    Fight was started by the germans in the town of the chateau. The Germans attacked the AEF and retaliated with a counter-assault, and the enemy was repulsed and driven them back commandingly. This battle would later be designated as the turning point of World War I. Out of the 66 men from Madison County who died during World War I, four were killed in action during the battle.
  • Battle of Belleau Wood

    Occurred on June 6th, 1918, the united states were trying to capture Belleau and clear it from the germans. Was the most ferocious battle fought by American troops during the war. The US won the war over Germany.
  • Germany Signed an Armistice

    On November 11th the Armistice was finally agreed . The war on the Western Front had finally come to an end. Though one of several armistices signed in 1918, it is the armistice of Nov. 11 that left a lasting global legacy. The war was over after this.
