    Brown v. Board of Education
    NAACP combine 5 cases and take it to the Supreme Court. The court decides the 9-0 to avoid the separate, but equal. Black students weren’t allowed in the school.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    Murder of Emmett Till
    Accused of whistling at a white woman. 3 days later, Roy Bryant and others kidnapped, tortured, and killed Emmett Till. They wrapped his neck with barb wire then dumped him into the water.
  • Rosa Parks and the Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks and the Bus Boycott
    Rosa is arrested for failing to move seats on the bus. She is fined $10. MLKJ and the church send out flyers to boycott the bus system. On Dec 5th, the buses ran empty for 38 days. Supreme Court ruled bus had to let black people ride.
  • Southern Christian Leadership Conference

    Southern Christian Leadership Conference
    A meeting of black church pastors to coordinate events for black people. MLK was elected the 1st President. This group used a nonviolent strategy. This group also registered blacks to vote. They also opposed Vietnam War and better jobs for blacks.
  • Little Rock 9

    Little Rock 9
    A student wanted to go to the white school. The Governor of Arkansas call out the national guard to stop them. President Eisenhower calls in 12 military men to escort the students from home to class. In 1959, schools finally integrated.
  • Greensboro Sit ins

    Greensboro Sit ins
    Go to Woodworth’s to buy items then go sit at the Lunch counter. They refused to serve and told them to leave, but they stayed. Day after day, they come back. The amount of students get over to 1,000.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    A diverse group of volunteers from 39 states, most were college students. Arrived in Anniston, Alabama, but were blocked by KKK. Tires were slashed, fire bombed, buses burned and beatings town after town.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    250,000 people gathered in W.D.C Peaceful and respectful protest. MLK gives the “I have a dream speech”. He was the last speaker of the day.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    Ended the Federal Gov. to prevent racial discrimination and segregation based on race, color, religion, or natural origin in private businesses or public facilities.
  • Assassination of Malcom X

    Assassination of Malcom X
    Civil Rights leader who was part of the Nation of Islam. He wanted black people to believe in themselves and start their own businesses. He was shot 21 times. Thomas Hagen convicted of killing.
  • Selma to Montgomery Marches (Bloody Sunday)

    Selma to Montgomery Marches (Bloody Sunday)
    Black marchers wanted to walk 54 miles to Montgomery to register to vote. At the Edward Bridge, troops brutality beat them.
  • Voting Rights Act

    Voting Rights Act
    Ending the right to vote of African Americans any discrimination in voting. Now a federal matter, not state.
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King

    Assassination of Martin Luther King
    Striking Sanitation workers protest in Memphis. He went back to the motel where he was then shot on the right side of his face. James Earl Ray sentenced to 99 years. MLK’s death marks the end of the Civil Rights Act.
