Alliance of Russia and France
Bismark took a posible ally away from France by making a treaty with Russia. Then Wilhelm let his treaty with Russia lapse and Russia formed a defensive military alliance with France. War with Russia or France could cause Germany to become the enemy of both, then Germany would be forced to fight a two front war on the eastern and western borders. -

After Austria took over Bosnia and Herzegovia, tensions between Serbia and Austria steadily rose. Serbia vowed to take Bosnia and Herzegovia away from Austria, Austria vowed to crush Serbian's efforts. -
The assassination of Archduck Ferdinand
The archduck and his wife were on there way to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. They took a wrong turn an it happen to be that somone was waiting with a gun to shoot them. The killer was Gavrilo Princip. Because he was Serbian, Austria decided to punish Serbia. This lead to war. -
Great Britian Declares war on Germany
The German government declared war on Russia, Russia looked to France for help. Germany didn't wait for Frace to react. Two days after declaring war on Russia, Germany declared war on France, Great Britian declared war on Germany. The reason great Britian declared war on France is because Germany wanted to invade France through neutral Belgium. This upset Great Britian because Belgium was neutral so they declared war on Germany. -
The Battle Lines are Drawn - Central Powers and Allies
Germany and Austria-Hungry were know as Central Powers because of their location in the heart of Europe. Belgaria and the Ottoman Empire later join the Central Powers. Great Britian, France, and Russia were the Allied Powers or the Allies. JApan joins within weeks. Italy joined later. -
The First Declaration of war
Austria-hungry declared war on Serbia then Russia being in an alliance with Serbia declared war on Austria-hungry. Then Germany declared war on Russia and Serbia and also on France. Germany wanted to invade through neutral Belgium, Great Britian thought this was unacceptable because Belgium is neutral. Then Italy leaves the triple alliance and joins the Triple entente and teh ottomans join the Triple alliance. Japan also joins the Triple entente. And the war begins.
