Progressive Legislation

  • Antiquities Act

    This protected natural resources or land with historical or scientific interests. This protected federal lands.
  • Hepburn Act

    This act was meant to give power to the Interstate Commerce Commission in order to regulate railroad shipping. Giving the power to the ICC and expanding the jurisdiction allowed it to set increased railroad rates.
  • Meat Inspection Act

    This prohibited the sale of misled meat or misbranded meat. This also prohibited unsanitary slaughter as well as processing. This was good for the community and the well-being of those who ate the meat.
  • Pure Food and Drug Act

    This prohibited the sale of misbranded drugs as well as food. This prohibited adulterated food and drugs as well. This act was to regulate the safety of people from the bad meat and drugs.
  • 16th Amendment

    The 16th Amendment gives Congress the power to issue an income tax without basing it on population. The tax should go to the army or to build bridges roads as well etc.
  • Mann-Elkins Act

    The Mann-Elkins Act strengthened the ICC by giving government´s regulatory power definitely. This act also suspended railroad rate hikes and set rates.
  • Workers Compensation Act

    This was made to replace the Workers Compensation Act of 1926. This helped with employment-related injuries or diseases.
  • 17th Amendment

    This Amendment makes 2 Senators from each state elected by the people of that state for six years with only one vote. This allowed voters of the state to vote for their Senators of the State they are from.
  • Federal Reserve Act

    This was passed by the 63rd United State Congress. This created a central banking system for the U.S. This was to protect the economy.
  • Clayton Antitrust Act

    This act made sure that companies were fair and had good competition in the marketplace. This act also removed the Monopolies in the Gilded Age.
  • Federal Trade Commission Act

    This banned unfair acts that would affect commerce. This gave agencies the authority to punish the practices.
  • Keating-Owen Act

    This prohibited child labor and regulated interstate commerce. This also sets age limits and hours of work.
  • Adamson Act

    This passed the eight-hour workday with the ability of overtime hours with pay. This was for interstate railroad workers.
  • Volstead Act

    This act enforced the 18th Amendment. This was to prohibit the selling of alcoholic beverages. This act defined any drink that was more than one-half of one percent of alcohol to be banned.
  • 18th Amendment

    It declared that the production as well as the transportation of alcohol would be made illegal. This did not ban the overall consumption though.
  • 19th Amendment

    This allows women the right to vote and the government can not deny people to vote
