The Tripartite Act/creation of Axis powers
Germany, Italy, and Japan signed an agreement that formed an alliance between the three hostile countries. It was made so that if any country (especially the US) declared war on any three of the countries, the other two would fight with their alliance at war. -
1940 Election
Roosevelt ran for an unorthodox third term for presidency since there was no rule set forth about how many terms each president can serve yet. Roosevelt beat his opponent Wendell Willkie with 55% of the votes cast. -
Lend-Lease Act
Roosevelt developed this policy in order to help Britain out by lend or leasing arms and other supplies to "any country whose defense was vital to the United States." Isolationists were opposed to it but it eventually was passed. -
Soviet Union invasion
Hitler broke the agreement with Stalin by invading Soviet Union. Roosevelt sent supplies to Stalin due to the lend-lease act. -
Atlantic Charter
Roosevelt wanted to extend the term of draftees. Only passed by one vote. Churchill and Roosevelt created the Atlantic Charter which means that the US and Great Britian woould set forth their goals in opposing the Axis powers. -
US destroyer Greer gets fired on by U-boats
After the German submarine fired on Greer, Roosevelt sent orders to destroy any submarine on sight. Two weeks later, U-boats destroyed the Pink Star, next Reuben James. By the constant attacks on the American ships, Roosevelt's calmness was growing thinner and thinner. -
The Decoded Message
Roosevelt intercepted a message that was to Japan telling them to not accept any peace proposals from the US. Roosevelt then declared, "This means war." Attack on Pearl Harbor!
