Abe Lincoln
He is a great part of history because he helped to free slaves in the United States. He also wrote a very important document called the Emancipation Proclamation which stated that slaves would be freed in confederate territory, not in the north. Abraham Lincoln let slaves become free in 1866 and was the first president to lead the country into war. -
Andrew Johnson
Andrew took over the presidency when Lincoln was assassinated. Vigoriously pushed the Kansas-Nebraska Act. He instigated what became known as the Ostend Manifesto which demanded that Spain either sell Cuba to the US or lose it to a war with the US. After this document became public there was so much public outrage that he had to formally repudiate it. -

Theodore Roosevelt
In 1907, Roosevelt made an agreement with Japan known as the Gentleman's Agreement whereby Japan agreed to slow the immigration of laborers to America and in exchange the U.S. would not pass a law like the Chinese Exclusion Act.
From 1904-05, the Russo-Japanese War occurred. Roosevelt was the mediator of the peace between the two countries. Due to this, he won the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize -
William Howard Taft
Taft continued to enforce antitrust laws. He was key in bringing down the Standard Oil Company in 1911. Also during Taft's term in office, the sixteenth amendment was passed that allowed the U.S. to collect income taxes. -
Woodrow Wilson
During his presidency the Treaty of Versailles (1919) came about.
Eighteenth Amendment ratified prohibiting alcoholic beverages (1919) during his time in office.
Nineteenth Amendment ratified giving women the right to vote (1920) was a major event for his presidency. -
