Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated on March 4, 1961. On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclomation, which freed all the slaves in the Confederacy, and layed ground for the 13th Amendment. Abraham was known as "The Great Emancipator" because of the Emancipaiton Proclomation. While president, Lincoln had freed many slaves. -
Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson was inaugurated as president on April 15, 1865. While president, Johnson ratified the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery. Also, he purchased Alaska, making it a state in the US. He also ratified the 14th amendment, which defined who was a citizen, and it provided equal protection to all US citizens. -
Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was inaugurated as president on March 4th, !869. While president, Grant signed bills that promoted black voting rights. Also, he passed the inflation bill, which made more money for the US. Literally. He also signed the Civil Rights Act of 1875, which granted full rights to enjoy public entertainement for the blacks. -
Rutherford B. Hayes
As president, Hayes implemented modest civil service reforms. He also etoed the bland allison act and created the great railroad strike. -
Grover Cleveland
Grover Cleveland was the leader of the pro-business Bourbon Democrats who opposed high tariffs, free silver, inflation, and subsides to business, farmers, or veterans. The Panic of 1893 started a great depression and Cleveland was not able to reverse it. Cleveland also vetoed many bills for American Civil War veterans. -
Willam Mckinley
On June 16, 1897, William McKinley signed annexing the Republic of Hawaii to the United States
In Civil Service administration, McKinley reformed the system to make it more flexible in critical areas.
Important act during McKinley's time was the Gold Standard Act where by the U.S. was officially placed on the gold standard. -
Theodore Roosevelt
-Issued a corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.
-Roosevelt made the White House the center of news every day, providing interviews and photo opportunities. -
William H. Taft
2 new amendments were sent to the states for ratification under his term, 1) Federal Income Tax and 2) direct election of Senators. Also,
The Interstate Commerce Commission was directed to set railroad rates.
Taft used DOLLAR Diplomacy, by using US economic power and guaranteed monetary loans, to convince other countries to agree. -
Woodrow Wilson
While president, Woodrow Wilson limited railway work to only 8 hours a day. He also implemented a graduated Federal income tax. Also, he successfully led the United States to victory in World War I.
