Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the president in office during the separation of the south and the outbreak of the Civil War. During Abraham Lincoln's presidency he abolished slavery in the South and set the slaves free with the Emancipation Proclamation. He was all for the preservation of the Union and keeping the nation together. -
Andrew Johnson
Andrew Johnson continued Lincolns hopes for Reconstruction by giving all rebels in the south a complete pardon. He overlooked the states refusal to ratify the Thirteenth amendment, supported black codes, vetoed the Freedmans Bureau, and vetoed the Civil Rights Act of 1866 which all made hopes for Reconstruction harder. Johnson was impeached in 1868 because Congress didn't like the way he was taking care of Reconstruction. -
Ulysses S. Grant
With the Radical Repulicans, Grant drafted the Fifteenth Amendment. The Battle of Little Bighorn was fought while Grant was in office. The Transcontiental Railroad was completed too, which helped for the boom of moving west during Grant's term. Grant was also invloved in many political scandals which added to the troubles of the Gilded Age. -
James A. Garfield
Less than four months after Garfield was inaruguated, he was assassinated. He refused to increase security around the White House becasue he thought assassination was not to be worried about. So Garfield didn't accomplish much during his time of presidency. -
Grover Cleveland
Grover Cleveland served two nonconsecutive terms as president and he was the only U.S. president to do so. During his first term, he stopped the act of giving government jobs out in return for political favors. He also made the Sherman Silver Purchase Act but it failed so it was repealed in 1893. -
William McKinley
McKinley imported the Gold Standard Act during his time of presidency. McKinley was assassinated on September 6, 1901 by Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition. He died eight days later which left Roosevelt as president. -
Theodore Roosevelt
When Roosevelt took office, he turned around the country with his trustbusting laws such as the Elkins Act and Hepburn Act. Roosevelt helped the everyday consumers by protecting them with the Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act. Roosevelt also protected the environment with land reclamation laws. -
William Howard Taft
Taft was responsible for the passing of the Mann-Elkins Act and the Sixteeth Amendment which permitted a graduated income tax. Taft signed the Payne- Aldrich Tariff which angered the progressives. The Ballinger-Pinchot Affair, when Taft fired Pinchot, also angered many people and turned public view against Taft. -
Woodrow Wilson
Wilson ran on a platform called "New Freedom" in which he promised to reform the country. Wilson lowered tariffs with a graduated income tax with the Underwood Tariff Act. Wilson also improved the banking system with the Federal Reserve Act which created a three tiered banking system. He passed many acts helping the average people are farmers and also delt with womans suffrage movements during his presidency. -
Warren G. Harding
Harding won the election of 1920 with his Pro- Business administration. He was involved in many scandals during his presidency, one being the Teapot Dome scandal, in which Albert Fall persuaded Edwin Derby to transfer control of naval oil to his department. Harding died in office from food poisoning.
