The Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was a land deal between the United States and the French. This purchase roughly doubled the size of the United States, streching from the Mississippi river to the Rocky Mountains. This also led to westward expansion; the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
I included this event in my timeline because with addition of the Louisiana Purchase we were able to expand the country and explore new territory. -
Lewis and Clarks Expedition
The Lewis and Clark Expedition was the start to the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase. In their expedition they established contact with Native Amerians and collected valuable information about western plants and animals.
I included the event in my timeline because the Lewis and Clark Expedition helped the United States at the time get a better feel for what beyond the Mississippi River. -
Pike's Expadition
Pike's Expedition was an effort authorized by the United States government to explore the south and west of the Louisiana Purchase. Pike was arrested during his trip because he wondered into Spanish lands. But when Pike was released he came back with information on his discoveries.
I included this in my timeline because after his journey Pike praised the opportunity of doing business with the Spanish in the Southwest. -
Embargo Act
The Embargo Act banned trade with all foreign countries. American ships could not sail to foreign port and American ports were also closed to British ships. The act was put in place, in hopes to prevent war with Britain and France and to protect American merchant ships.
I included this event in my timeline because the embargo act really damaged Thomas Jefferson's popularity and strengthened the Federalist Party. -
Cumberland Road
The Cumberland Road or the National road was the first road built by the federal government. At first it ran from Cumberland, Maryland, to Wheeling, Ohio. As it was expanded, it later reached all the way to Illinois.
I included this event in my timeline because the Cumberland Road lead to many other expansions in transportation. -
Erie Canal
The Erie Canal was one of the largest projects in water transportation at the time.The Erie Canal ran from Albany to Buffalo, New York. The Erie Canal allowed good and people to move from place to place on water fast.
I included this event on my timeline because the success with the Erie Canal created a boom in canal building across the country. -
Convention of 1818
The Convention of 1818 gave fishing right off parter of Newfoundland and Labrador coasts. It also set the border between the United States and Canada at 49 degrees North latitude as far west as the Rocky Mountains.
I included this event in my timeline because the treaty helped solve some issues with Britain. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
The Adams-Onis Treaty settled all border disputes with Spain and the United States. In this treaty Spain had to give up East Florida to the United States, and then the United States would give up it's claims to what is present day Texas.
I included this event in my timeline because it settled all of the border disputes with Spain at the time. -
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise settled the conflict that had come up between Missouri's application for statehood. Missouris would enter the Union as a slave state, as Maine joned the state as a free state, making the free to slave states equal. Salvery would be prohibited in any new state under the Missorui southern border.
I included this into my timeline because even though this compromise was made there was still fighting over slavery between the Noth and South. -
Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine was an exclusive statement of American policy warning European powers not to interfere with the Americans.
I included this in my timeline because the Monroe Doctrine did not only help back then, but is still in effect today.
