End of the French and Indian War
While most of the fighting ended in 1760, the war came to an official end in 1763 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

Royal Proclamation of 1763
The Royal Proclamtion of 1763 restricted the territory of the colonists. They could not move West after the French and Indian War ended.

Stamp Act Passed by British Parliament
The Stamp Act was a tax on the American colonists, and they didn't want to be taxed by someone other than their own representative. The taxes were defended in Great Britain by using the term 'virtual representation'. This was the belief that each delegate spoke for all British subjects, not just their own region.

First Quartering Act
The colonists had to provide shelter and food for British soldiers if ordered to do so.

Boston Massacre
British soldiers killed five civilians in Boston.

Boston Tea Party

The Boston Port Act made the use of the Boston Port illegal after the Boston Tea Party.

Colonists were already moving toward that area when Britian gave it to the French. This angered the colonists.

"Join, or Die"</a>Paul Revere revised the snake a little to fit on his paper, the Massachussetts Spy. It has the same theme and symbolism as Benjamin Franklin's original cartoon.

Common Sense Published
Common Sense by Thomas Paine published. It contains arguments supporting the war. One argument is that Great Britain is a small island very far away, so it shouldn't rule us. This is a similar idea to when Britain ruled, but not very strictly. This loose control is known as salutary neglect.

The Wealth of Nations Published
The Wealth of Nations was written by Adam Smith isms described as a critique of mercantilism. Mercantilism is the belief that a country's power depends on its wealth. In about 1760, the British adopted mercantilism. Adam Smith argued in The Wealth of Nations that a free market is better.

Declaration of Independance signed
This was the official document declaring the United States independent from Britain.
