Immanuel Kant
Devloped a concept of descent. Kant realized that similarities in organisms may have meant thuat they came from a similar ancestor. -
Carolus Linnaeus
Published his book, "Systema Naturae" which gave a way to classify all organisms. (which is still in use).He believed there was a certain order which was controlled by god. -
William Paley
Paley believed that everything was created and run by god. He disregarded evolution based on his beliefs. -
Jean Baptiste Lamarck
Lamarck believed that organisms wanted to adapt to their enviornment. Also that the disuse of parts would change their size or shape. -
Comte de Buffon
Buffon devloped the definition of a modern day species. He thought that all organisms were created by god and arranged in a hierarchy with mankind at the top of creation. -
Pierre Louis Maupertuis
Pierre wrote of modifications and adapataions accumiliating over many generations. Thus slowly accumliating adaptations and making the species better making it easier for it to survive. -
Charles Bonnet
Charles Bonnet used the term of "evolution" to describe his theory of pre formation. The theory stated that all females carried a small form of a future generation. -

Georges Culiver
Cuiver published his findings on the differences of living elephants to those he found in the fossil record. Finding many, he inferred that they were very different than present day. -

Erasmus Darwin published "Zoonomia" which suggested that "all warm-blooded animals have arisen from one living filament" -

Philosophie zoologique was published by Lamarck stating his theories of evolution. -

Charles Lyell
Lyelle wrote a 3 volume series, Principles of Geology (1830-1833), Lyell inferred the fact that the earth must be very old and that it has been gone through the same sort of natural processes in the past that still happen today shape the land. -
James Hutton
Said that the key to understanding the future was to look at the past. Darwin was influenced by his biological findings and works. -
