    Harriet Tubman Escapes to Philadelphia
    Harriet Tubman escapes slavery from Maryland to Philadelphia, but felt alone. She also started the Underground Railroad, made 13 trips back home, rescuing some 70 slaves, many of which were kin.
  • Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
    The government had the power to arrest any slave without a trial. It also forced Northern citizens to assist in the captures of any accused fugitive slaves. This caused Northeners to hate slavery even more.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin is Published

    Uncle Tom's Cabin is Published
    Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, this book was very popular in the North and increased the popularity of abolitionist. In the book, slaves are referred to as people. The South hated this and it caused tension between the North & South.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Slavery in Nebraska and Kansas would be determined by popular sovereignty. The act tipped the balance between slave and free states. This outraged the North as the South gained the upper hand.

    The case of Dred Scott suing for his freedom made it all the wy to the Supreme Court, but was turned down. Judges say that one reason was becuase has was a slave, not a citizen, and that slaves were proprty, and did not have any kind of freedom.

    The Lincoln-Douglas Debates
    In 1858, Abraham Lincoln was elected by republicans to Run for Senate againt Stephen Douglas, and Souhterners were convinced that Lincoln was an abolitionist. During debated, Douglas defended popular sovereignty, and Lincoln attacked slavery. In the end, Douglas won the Senate election.

    John Brown Attacks Harper's Ferry
    Abolitionist John Brown led a band of supporters to attack Harper's Ferry, Virginia in attempt to sieze the guns and give them to enslaved African Americans to lead a revolt. However, 10 of his followers were killed and he was hung after being found guilty of murder in court.

    South Carolina Secedes
    The legislature of South Carolina called for a special meeting. After Abraham Lincoln's election, the state felt that they could only have power if it created its own nation. This caused several other states to secede from the Union and create the Conferderate States of America.

    After Lincoln was elected President of the U.S, 11 states seceded from the Union. They then made up the Confederate States of America. Slavery and agriculture were dominant in this part of America. The voted President was Jefferson Davis.
