Harriet Tubman escapes to Philadelphia
Harriet Tubman escaped to Philadelphia from her slave owner. She became the conductor of the underground railroad. She helped many slaves become free through the underground like her self. -
The Fugitive Slave Act
Congress passed a law which stated if slaves ran away if they were found by slave hunter or citizen they had to be returned. If they didn't return the slave there would be punishments for them and the slave(s). This law was part of the compromise of 1850. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin published
Harriet Beecher Stowe published a fictional book on a slave's life. this book helped show the issues of slavery and helped slowly "destroy"/decrease slavery. This also caused problems between the north and south because of the decrease in slavery. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This bill was introduced by Stephen A. Douglas. This bill decided to allowed settlers to chose if slavery was allowed there or not.
Stephen A. Douglas did this because of popular sovereignty.
This act caused/lead up to bleeding Kansas. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott went to court and tried to sue for his freedom, he wanted to be free of being a slave and to have basic human rights. once the case got to supreme court he was deemed just a slave, a piece of property with no rights. -
Abraham Lincoln debates Stephen Douglas
Stephen Douglas struggled to keep his seat due to Abraham Lincoln. They both debated towards slavery in Illinois.
Stephen Douglas won all the debate but they followed him, later on, affected him. -
John Brown attacks Harper's Ferry
A group of people captured Lewis Washington. They then took weapons and other things. He wanted to capture the arms there and give them out to slaves. -
Abraham Lincoln Elected
Abraham Lincoln was elected as president, he was elected even though he didn't have the popular vote, he had enough electoral votes to win. This lead to many states seceding. -
South Carolina Secedes
South Carolina seceded, they were the first state to do so. They did this after President Lincoln was elected, they didn’t want to be controlled by him. Once they decided they created their own country with the other states who later seceded. -
The Confederacy is formed
All the southern states that seceded formed their own entire country together every time a State seceded they joined. They called their country the confederacy of America.
