Industrilization
New machines were being created to make life and work easier and faster. The first of these was the cotton gin. The cotton gin also revolutionized slavery. The productivity was increased. Factor systems were changed. -
Missouri compromise
An effort to maintain a balance of power between the slave holding states and free states. It divided the territiory acquired from France "louisiana territory" at the latitude 36 degrees. No more slave states were allowed the line. The compromise was criticized by many of the southerners because it established that congress could make slavery laws. This wasnt a perminate solution. -
Jacksonian Democracy
Jackson came back and was elected as president in 1828. Immediately following he exploited the spoils system by surrounding himself with political supporters. Westerners and southerners loved Jackson for his seemingly rugged individuality and strength. However, the north feared him. -
The Abolitionist Movement
The debate over slavery, it was the most divisive issue. The movement grew from a small faction in the 1820's. Though the Abolitionists opposed slavery, they by no means advocated racial equality. At this time, only radical abolitionists such as William Lloyd Garrison demanded immediate emancipation of all slaves. -
War with Mexico
Driven by the common term manifest destiny. James K Polk sought out to take New Mexico, part of Texas, and California. The northerners didnt like it be they thought that the southerners were using this to get more land. -
Fugitive Slave Act
This was part of the 1850 compromise. It encouraged slave owners to pursue runaway slaves, in the north. -
Supreme Court ruling on Dred
Sepreme court ruled that slavery could not be restricted in any territory. This helped the south by nullifyling both the missouri compromise and the Kansas/Nebraska act. Created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, opening new lands for settlement, and had the effect of repealing the Missouri Compromise of 1820. -
Presedential Election
Abramham Lincoln defeated Breackinridge because of the norths larger population. The north then gained control of the government and restrict slavery. The south then had to decide to either leave the union or give up slavery. -
Anaconda Plan
A strategy created by UnIon General Scott. It called for the strangling of the Southern 'Confederacy. It was never officially adopted. It had a huge impact in how the civil war would be fought. -
Emancipation Proclamation
President Abramham LIncoln issued it. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." The proclimation was limited in many ways. Although the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in the nation, it captured the hearts and the imagination of millions of Americans and fundamentally transformed the character of the war.
