    Potsdam Conference
    In July 17,1945 there was a conference between the U.S president Harry S. Truman,British Prime Minister winston Churchill, and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin. During the conference Churchill was replaced by Clement Attlee, who succeeded him as a Prime Minister. The effects on this paragraph is where that people don’t always agree on the argument on what their country about their choices and how it will be great or a horrible idea for their nation and their people.
  • Korean War

    On June 25, 1950, the North Koreans, supported by the Soviets, attacked southward across the 38th parallel. This eventually began the Korean War. Japan controlled Korea and the Union took over in the North. This caused the 38th parallel of latitude to be known as divided lines between two parts. This “angered” China and on November 25, 1950, Chinese troops entered the war. On December 31, 1950, the Chinese and North Koreans began a second invasion of South Korea.

    In May 14, 1955, the treaty was signed by the Soviet Union, East Germany, and Hungary. In 1955, The Soviet Union wanted to establish a strong defense association against any potential military or economic threats from the West side of Germany. The purpose was to strengthen the hold of The Soviet Union over its European satellites and the prevention of the close ties with the west. This led to the uprising in Hungary in 1956 causing restraints on personal freedom.

    The vietnam war began in 1955, after it was split into two parts. North Vietnam wanted to reunite the country under Communism, its political and economic system. South Vietnam fought to keep this from happening. North Vietnam won the war in 1975. Vietnam later on became a united, Communist country.

    On July 26,1956 the Suez Crisis was provoked by an American and British decision not to finance Egypt’s construction of the Aswan High Dam. Egypt invaded their territory and as the result, America and Britain would not pay for what they need the most. Nasser reacted to the American and Britain decision by declaring martial law in the canal zone and seizing the control of the Suez Canal Company. Nasser emerged from the Suez Crisis a victor and a hero for the cause of Arab and Egyptian nationalism

    The Space program started in October 4,1957 and the Russians successfully launched the 1st satellite in space. The reason why this event happened is a competition with the U.S for Tech superiority. The effect on this for the people is that it creates a space and weapons race program started. Overall at the end the success of Sputnik had a major impact on the Cold War and the United States.

    During the Cuban Missile Crisis, leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union engaged in a tense, 13-day political and military standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. shores.

    Glasnost/Perestroika
    Glasnost was the second vital plank of Gorbachev’s reform efforts. They considered it as the only way to to overcome the “inertia in the Soviet political bureaucratic apparatus”. The Soviet government became the head of everything and in 1985, Gorbachev introduced the concept of perestroika. He wanted a program of “moderate’’ and imbue the stagnant Soviet economy. He worked for the Soviet Union grow economically with capitalist countries and “encouraged enterprises to become self financing”.
