Bretton Woods Agreement
It set the framework for a global economy in the postwar era by setting up an International Monetary Fund, a World Bank, and general agreements on tariffs and trade. -
The Iron Curtain Descends
Creation of a wall which divided Europe into two areas (communist Soviet Union and other freed parts of Europe). -
WWII ends
V-J Day. The US ended war in Japan. -
Truman Doctrine
It provided aid (economically and militaristically) to "free people" of Greece and Turkey (part of containment). -
Taff- Harley Act
A pro-business act, vetoed by Truman, but overrode by Congress. -
Marshall Plan
Monetary Aid to Europeans to resist communism ($17 million). -
Berlin Blockade
The Soviets cut off Berlin and in return Truman ordered a Berlin airlift for assistance. -
Anticomunism Crusade
There was a fear of disloyalty and communist influence. A "zeal for democracy", and McCarthysim were two large components. -
McCarran Internal Security Act
This made it illegal to show support for a totalitarian government. -
Korean War
North Korea invaded South Korea. Truman was alarmed and sent aid to South Korea. -
End of Japanese occupation
Japan surrendered its claims to Korea and their Pacific islands. Japan became an ally of the US. -
Election of 1952
The election showed the issues of the government with problems surrounding Korea. Republican war hero Dwight D. Eisenhower won the election. -
End of the Korean War
The war ended in stalemate with and armistice dividing Korea into two parts (along the 38th parallel). -
Warsaw Pact
A military alliance supporting the defense of communism.
