  • The NAACP

    The NAACP opened up a Washington bureau in 1942 to monitor legislative activity, administering federal regulations and programs, working with similar groups and much more. Their first director was a man named Walter White.
  • CORE

    CORE was a group founded by a group of students from the university of Chicago. CORE stands for the congress of racial equality.
  • FEPC

    The fair employment practices committee was a group that was authorized to investigate alleged cases of discrimination in defense contracts with the government.
  • Jackie Robinson

    In 1947 Jackie Robinson became the first African american baseball player in america, starting the movement towards breaking down the "color line" in the sport
  • Rosa Parks

    in 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat to a white man. Her arrest led to the African american community increasing their efforts towards equality
  • Little Rock

    Nine black students were attacked by a white mob when attempting to enroll for classes. President Eisenhower confirmed the students right to be there and sent in troops to enforce it.
  • Freedom rides

    Three people participating in an event named freedom summer were killed during their efforts. These events outraged the people and helped to support the Civil rights movement.
  • The civil rights act

    Congress passed an important legislature, making congress and the supreme court equal partners in establishing civil rights. It also outlawed all discrimination in places of public accommodation.
