  • Indian Independance

    Indian Independance
    Before this act was passed, The UK had control of India. India wanted independace and they protested violently and non-violently. Eventually on August 15, 1947, the UK passed the act and split India into Pakistan and India.
  • Creation of Israel

    Creation of Israel
    The Jews believed that Palestine was the Promised Land. When they moved there, there was some conflict that happened between the Arabs and the Jews. The British tried to help, but did no good. Eventually the United Nations had to intervene to make a solution. They proposed a plan but the Arabs didn't like it. Even though 40% of the population was Jewish, they recieved more than half the land. A day later, the armies of Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Transjordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt attacked Israel.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The Soviet Union cut off all traffic and water to West Berlin. They hopes that the Allies will give up West Berlin or the idea of combining East and West Berlin. American and British planes fly in supplies for 11 months. During this time a plane is landing every 3 minutes. Eventually the Soviets lift the blockade.
  • Launch of Sputnik

    Launch of Sputnik
    The Soviets launch Sputnik into space in 1957. It was the first unmanned satellite ever launched. They used an ICBM to launch Sputnik.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    The CIA trains anti-Castro Cuban exiles to invade Cuba. The goal is to overthrow the government. Unfortunately the US doesn't provide the necessary support. This convinces the Soviets that the US won't resist their expansion into Latin America. The invaders are easily defeated.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    In 1962 the Soviets secretly build missile sites in Cuba. This is eventually discovered by a US spy plane. These missile sites are viewed as a threat by the US. The US eventually demands the removal of these missile sites. The US blockades Cuba to prevent Soviets from installing more missiles. There is a huge threat of war during this time. The soviets eventually agree to remove the missiles is the US doesn't invade Cuba.
  • USSR Invades Afghanistan

    USSR Invades Afghanistan
    Soviets invade in 1979. The US supplied rebels in Afghanistan to fight againsed the Soviets. The Soviet invasion was considered a threat to oil supplies. The US stopped grain shipments to the Soviet Union. The 1980 Moscow Olympics was Boycotted. In 1989, the Soviet President withdrew troops.
  • Assassination of Egyptian President Sadat

    Assassination of Egyptian President Sadat
    President Sadat was assassinated in 1981 by Omar Abdel-Rahman. He was assassinated in Cairo during the annual victory parade to celebrate Operation Badr.
  • Tiananmen Square Protest

    Tiananmen Square Protest
    Students were part of a protest that took place in the Tiananmen Square. This really hurt the reputation of China's political leadership. The protests were ended when leaders ordered the military to enforce martial law. They fired on civilians and students. 3,000 injured and more than 200 civilians and students were killed.

    Ayatollah Khomeini is Supreme Leader of Iran
    When Ayatollah Khomeini becomes the supreme leader of iran, he does many things while in office. He didn't care about the Shah and developed his own religion. Whoever protested againsed it was killed. His doctrines and beliefs were taught in schools.
