The Soviets launced Sputnik, the first unmanned satellite, during the Arms Race between America and the Soviet Union. An Intercontinental Ballistic Missle (IBCM) was used to launch the satellite into space. -

It was discovered by a U.S. spy plane that the Soviet Union had built secret missle sites in Cuba, which is only 90 miles from the coast of Flordia. The U.S. viewed this as a threat and demanded their removal, the Soviet Union agreed to remove them if the U.S. agreed not to invade Cuba. -
