Europe-Reign of KIng Alfred
The important thing to remember about Alfred was that he was the 1st one to successfullly unite the Saxons against the Danes.
He was known as a learned man and a good and fair adminsistrator.
This corresponds with the WHAP theme of state building, because Alfred united the Saxons so that they could effectively fight against the Danes. -

South-East Asia-Kingdom of Angkor
Dominated affairs in South-East Asia along with Singosari and Majapahit.
It derived most of its wealth from agricultural economy
Built great monuments testifying the influence of Indian traditons.
Main religion was Hindu and changed to Buddhism 1100-1200ce.
The Whap theme that corrisponds with this kingdom is the interaction of economic systems, which pertains to its agriculatural economy -

Mesoamerica-Toltecs
Came from northwester Mexico, and tapped the waters of the River Tula to irrigate crops.
The population might have gotten up to 60,000 and maintained a large standing army.
It was destroyed by internal conflict and nomadic incursion.
This corresponds with the WHAP theme of Expansion because they conquered locals and made them pay tribute. -

Africa-Kingdom of Ghana
Ghana was the center of the gold trade, but did not produce the gold itself.
Integration into trans-Saharan trade networks made Ghana very wealthy and powerful.
This corresponds with the WHAP theme of empire building, because Ghana grew into a large empire using trade. -

Africa-Swahili City States
The city states controlled all the trade up and down the east Africa coast.
They brought many Islamic merchants to the coast of africa to trade for gold, slaves, ivory, and exotic local products.
These follow the WHAP theme of empire building through the use of extensive trade networks. -
Period: Mar 1, 1206 to Mar 1, 1526
South Asia-The Sultanate of Delhi
They ruled northern India, and where an Islamic state.
They had a huge army, but did not extend the boundaries of their civilization by much.
Many of the Sultanates perished at the hands of assasins.
This empire corresponds with the Whap theme state building, which is also seen in the Carolingian empire because the empire of the Sultantates was established using religion, and the empire came from nothing. -
Period: Mar 1, 1206 to Mar 1, 1370
Asia-Mongols
Chengis Khan was the original ruler, and the one who built the whole organizationof the seperate mongol tribes.
They took over almost all of Asia, but didn't have enough cohesian to make a lasting empire.
Thee where 4 different khanates, Khanate of the Great Khan, The Golden Horde, The Ilkhanate, Chagatai Khanate.
This corresponds with the WHAP theme of empire building because their whole society was base on the building of a huge empire. -
Period: Mar 1, 1360 to Mar 1, 1405
South Asia-Tamerlane
His role model was Chinggis Khan, and showed this in what he wanted to do.
All he carred about was conquering.
From 1370s to his death he was constantly campaigning.
He attacked the Ottoman empire and severly weakened it.
This corresponds with the Whap theme of empire building, by how all he focused on was conquering.
