Alfonso I took Lisbon from the Muslims in 1147. Later Lisbon, Portugal became the capital for the county of Portugal. -

The Battle of Ceuta was the begining of the building of Portugal's Empire. Portugal conqured this city in 1415. About 45,000 men fought for Portugal and less than 10 died. Thousands of eminemies died and captured. -

The explorer Diogo Silves dicovered a group islands called the Azores. They are off the coast off Portugal. The nine major islands are split up into three groups and and are tourist areas. The islands are made up from volcanoes. -

Pedro Alvares Cabral discovers Brazil in 1500. Later Portugal would claim Brazil as part of its own. -

Portugal Claims Brazil in 1532. But it was colonized in 1534. Portugal was also fighting the French so they expanded farther into Brazil. -
The Lisbon Earthquake
One of the deadliest earthquakes in the world was The Lisbon Earthquake. Over 10,000 people died in it. To make it worse the quake was followed with fires and a tsunami. -
Napoleon Invades Portugal
Napoleon ordered Portugal to be invaded. The Royal Family moved to brazil, that is a reason for Brazil decareing Independence in 1843. -

In 1807 Napolean ordered the French to invade Portugal. Just 4 years after Portugal Drove out the French out. -
Brazil Separates From Portugal
Brazil wanted to become an independent country from Portugal. Portugal really didn't want that to happen because they got lots of natural recourses from Brazil. But Brazil declared their independence on Sept. 2, 1843. -
Portuguese Revolution
In 1910 the Portuguese Revolution, ends the monarchy in Portugal. After 771 years of monarchy King Manuel II was removed and the First Republic was established. -
Portugal Joins the UN
Portugal joined the UN in 1955. They joined the 192 other countries that are in the UN as of now. The UN has used the Portuguese forces already a couple times. -
Switch of Currency
In 2002 Portugal finally switched and started to use the European currency. They used the escudo before 2002.
