Computer Related Inventions in the 1980s

  • CD Player

    James Russel patented earlier forms of the cd player but it wasn't until 1982 when Sony and phillips licensed his patents and released the first cd players to the public. CDs allowed more data to be stored in compact discs which revolutionized the music industry and later the movie and video game industry as well.
  • Internet

    Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn are the founders of the internet. The internet is arguably the biggest invention of the modern world as it completely revolutionized how we communicate with each other. It also allows for information to spread at a rate humanity has never seen before.
  • Famicom

    The Famicom was a Japanese video game system created by Nintendo in 1983. Due to its wide spread success in Japan , it was later sold in the United States market in 1985 under the name of 'Nintendo Entertainment System'. This console revitalized the failing gaming industry as the public was starting to get bored of video games (before the Famicom, video games were seen as gimmicky and no one thought the trend would continue).
  • Dynatac 8000x

    Although the original mobile phone was invented in 1973 by Martin Cooper, it wasn't until 1983 that we saw the dynatac 8000x hit the markets. This was the first time everyday people were able to carry phones small enough to fit in their pockets.
  • Apple macintosh

    The apple macintosh was invented by Steve Jobs in 1984. This revolutionized modern computers as it was the first home computer that used a mouse rather than using commands to navigate the interface.
