Alexander VI, also called Rodrigo Borgia won 2/3 of the votes.A huge sum was spent on bribery and Borgia succeeded in buying the largest number of votes. -

Pope Alexander VI creates alliance against Naples
Pope Alexander VI gave away some lands to dukes and duchesses of different states in Italy. For the duke of Gandia and the duchess of Goffredo, the Pope decided to carve out land from the province of Naples. This angered king Ferdinand the head of state at that time, and he allied himself with the enemies of Pope Alexander VI. This made the Pope create an alliance against Naples. -

Pope Alexander VI divides new world lands between Spain and Portugal
Pope Alexander VI divided the lands of the new world which was agreed by Spain and Portugal. This treaty is called The Treaty of Tordesillas. Tordesillas is a city in which the Spanish and Portuguese met to sign the treaty. The treaty states that all lands west of 46 degrees west should belong to Spain, while those to the east should belong to Portugal. This meant that parts of countries such as India and Macau, were Portuguese territory, and areas such as Argentina were Spanish territory. -

The holy league is created to counteract King Charles VIII
King Charles VIII of France had quite a strong army that had colonized Naples. The pope created a holy league consisting of Italian city states such as Venice, Milan and Florencce. There were fears that king Charles VIII would colonized more states and so the duke of Milan at that time, Ludovico Sforza pleaded to the pope to stop the swift attacks of the French. This is why the pope created the holy league. -

The battle of Fornovo is fought and won by the league
King Charles VIII reached Naples at such a speed which shocked the Italians. The Venetians and their allies confronted the French troops in the city called Fornovo. King Charles saw the high numbers of troops(20,000 people) and was anxious. He tried to colonize the unprepared Parmatians, but it was stopped by the league. King Charles then asked for a safe passage, but it was denied by the Italians, so the only possible option was war.The league won, fullfiling the Pope's dream. -

Girolamo Savonarola is excommunicated by Pope Alexander VI
Girolamo Savonarola, one of the people that would eventually lead to the reformation, was excommunicated by Pope Alexander VI. Girolamo Savonarola was the arch enemy of the pope because his sermons were starting to get more and more popular in Florence, and Savonara was angry with the pope's corrupt and infamous rule. Pope Alexander did not want Savonara to gain popularity because Savonara was starting the reformation and it was very popular. So, this is the reason Savonara was excommunicated. -
