Federalists
The Federalists became a party in 1787. Normally northern buisness men and others supported the Feds. They had beleived in a strong national government. -
Democratic and Republican parties
Both the Democratic and the Republican parties became known parties at the same time. It was split between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson had won the election. -
Democratic party
The Democratic party got there logo when Andrew Jackson was running for presedent. He was being called a "jackass" and he took this as a complement. He had hung posters with donkeys on them but they did not last long. -
Whigs
The leaders of the party were John Quincy Adams and Henery Clay. The party is off from the Republican party. The Whigs had split because of the Mexican war and with there new president Zachary Taylor things did not get back together very quickly. -
Republican Party
Republican party became a major patry in 1860. Abraham Lincon was elected at the same time as this. Also at this time the Democratic party was split over slavery. -
Third Parties
Third parties are minor parties. They do play a major part in the system. These parties can branch off of the major parties,
