    The Federalist Party was the first American political party, and lasted the early 1790s to 1816. They are important because they truely are America's first party. They lost realvance as veiws begean to change on issues. Their defeat in 1816 was the final straw.
  • Democratic Republicans

    Democratic Republicans
    Democratic Republicans along with federalist are Americ's first political parties . Democratic Republicans favored states' rights and a strict interpretation of the Constitution. They become the basis of the mordern day Republican party.

    This election saw the turnover of power from the Federalist Party (Hamilton) to Jefferson and the Democratic-Republican Party. This is the first major realigning period in american history as the federalist were beat so bad bad the party desoilved

    In the 2nd realignment period in America, Andrew Jackson and his new party, the Democrats, come to power as the reform around the ideas of the Democratic republicans.

    Whigs
    The whig party came about in the 1830s. Whigs supported the supremacy of Congress over the presidency and favored a program of modernization and economic protectionism and were realvant because they countered the Jackson's Democrats. The party merged with the Republicans in the 1850's.

    Whigs collapsed in 1852 and there was political turmoil for a short period that gave rise to a short-lived third party, the Know Nothings. The Republican Party emerged from the Whigs under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln. Their main platform at the time was to end slavery but as time progressed, moved to create open market places for businessmen.

    The Republician party was formed in 1854 to combat slavery purely. The groups that made up the party was former whigs and free soilers. They remain realavent because they are the other main party in the two party system.

    The sourthren democratic party began in opposition to the main democratic party who veamently opposed slavery while the southrensers surported it. This group, who would eventually make up the confediceracy, ran their own presedential canidate(John Breckinridge).

    This realigning period saw an economic and geographical change in which the old lines of north vs. south changed to east vs. west and Citers against farmers. The republicans stood for big business and city people as the democrats took the side of the farmers.

    The Bull Moose Party was formed after former President Theodore Roosevelt, after a split in the Republican Party between himself and President William Howard Taft. They were relevant because they were the first party to bring progressive issue to the forefront.
