First 2 parties were Federalist and Anti Federalist. Federalist were the rich and well born led by Alexander Hamilton. They wanted a strong national government and appealed to financial, manufacturing, and commercial intrest. -

In 1828 Andrew Jackson's Democratic Party came to power, but were soon crippled by the war. -
Republicans
Because Democrats were crippled by war, the Republicans were left to rule for the next 75 years. -
