  • Illinewek Confederation

    Illinewek Confederation
    The Illinewek Confederation was a political alliance amongst several Native American tribes. They were around the late 15th century. The major groups in it were the Peoria, Kaskaskia, Cahokia, and the Michigamea. They were a major power in the Cahokia reigon. The name 'Illinewek' later gave Illinois its name. Around the 17th century they had to compete with other tribes for control of the land because of Iroquios expansion and European settlement. They deterioated and the Potawatomi took over.
  • Illinois Territory

    Illinois Territory
    The Illinois Territory was created on 1809. The capital of it was Kaskaskia. The Territory was created by an Act of Congress. .In the Territory was included land that would become Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. It was an object of dispution during the War of 1812. In 1818 Congress created an act that said the people that lived there could start forming a state. In 1818 Illinois became a state in the Union.

    In 1818 the president at the time, James Monroe, signed Illinois into statehood. The Act of Congress gave it a state constitution and an established bounday line. Before Illinois became a state, though, it had to have at least 60,000 people. When it reached that number Illinois became the 21st state admitted into the union.Not many above the required 60,000 weren't settled in Illinois at first, but then when some farmers discovered how rich the soil was, more came to the prarie.

    Chicago Becomes a City
    By 1833 only 150 people lived in Chicago. In 1834 the government convinced the neighboring tribes to move off that land. In return they got a bit of money and territory west of the Mississippi. About 3,000 Native Americans left. After they left the popullation had a sharp increase. By 1837 Chicago grew to have a population of 4,000 people and was large enough to become a city.

    Trail of Tears
    The Trail of Tears happened from 1838-1839. It was at first called the Indian Removal Act.Everyone was peaceful at first, but then the troubles started. The Cherokees were taken off of their land in Illinois because It was fertile and some of it had gold on it. This was happening all over. The Native Americans were treated harshly and forced to go to where is now Oklahoma. Around 4,000 died.
  • Abraham Lincoln

    In 1860 Abraham Lincoln became the 16th president of the United States. He was the first Republican to be elected. He ran against John Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephen Douglass. He's considered one of the greatest American presidents ever. He is the most famous for bringing the Union back together, despite the slavery issues.

    In 1908 ther was a race riot in Springfield. A race riot is a riot for dislike of a certain race who lives near you or in your community. The Springfield one was one of the most brutal from that time period. The NAACP was established in 1909 to try to create racial equality, or at least diminish hatred. They played an important part in the Civil Rights Movement. It is one of the nations oldest civil right organization.

    In 1920 Illinois was expanding in all aspects, the biggest ones being coal mining, farming, and facory workers. Business was booming everywhere. Many people moved to Illinois. More rights were givin. That time period was called the Roaring '20s. Sadly, it couldn't last and the Great Depression happened.
  • Henry Horner

    Henry Horner
    Henry horner was born in 1879. He was Illinois 30th govenor. He was Democratic. He was first elected in 1932. He was serving a second term, but died in service. He was 61, in the 1940s. He is not very widely known, but helped Illinois to start back up after the depression.
  • 21st Century

    21st Century
    Present day Illinois is a very advanced society. It has 102 counties, parks, forests, museums, big industry and agriculture, and much more. Its population in the 2012 census was 12,875,255 people. Illinois has maintained its status as one of the few top states throughout history.
