  • Containment

    President Harry Truman's foreign policy that the US would provide political, military, and economic aid to democratic countries under the threat of communist influences. To prevent the spread of communism.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine established that the U.S would provide political , military, and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external or internal authoritarian forces
  • Marshall Plan

    President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948. It became known as the Marshall Plan. Secretary of State George Marshall, in 1947 proposed that the United States provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe.
  • Korean War

    The Korean War was fought between North Korea and South Korea from 1950 to 1953. The war began on June 25th 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that state laws establishing separate but equal. Public schools denied African American students the equal education stated in the Fourteenth Amendment.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks Arrest after her refusal to move to the back of a bus triggers a citywide boycott of the bus system
  • Vietnam War

    A Cold War conflict pitting the U.S. and the remnants of the French colonial government in South Vietnam against the indigenous but communist Vietnamese independence movement, the Viet Minh, following the latter's expulsion of the French in 1954.
  • Kennedy/Nixon presidential Debates

    First debates to be shown on TV. (Seventy million people watched it). Nixon was more knowledgeable about foreign policy and Kennedy looked and spoke more forceful(TV producers) Kennedys ultimately won the presidency.

  • Bay of Pigs

    An unsuccessful invasion of Cuba in 1961, which was sponsored by the United States. Its purpose was to overthrow Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
  • U.S involvement with Cuba

    Under the Treaty of Paris, Cuba became a U.S. protectorate from 1898 to 1902; the U.S. gained a position of economic and political dominance over the island.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    1962 crisis that arose between the United States and the Soviet Union over the Soviets attempt to place nuclear missiles in Cuba.

  • Great Society

    War on Poverty - programs intended to eliminate poverty by improving living conditions Education - bills provided for new and better-equipped classrooms (education money) Medicare - guaranteed health care to every American over 65 years old. Medicaid - provided health care assistance to the poor. Environment - introduced measures to reclaim clean air and drinking water.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    This federal law made it illegal for Black voters to be disenfranchised through unfair voter registration criteria.
  • 1968 Election

    In the presidential election, Richard Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey. Nixon won the popular vote by less than one point.
  • Tet Offensive

    A surprise attack by the Vietcong (North Vietnamese) on South Vietnamese (the side US was supporting) towns and cities in early 1968.
  • MLK Assassination

    MLK was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. This resulted in an outrage in the black community and riots across the nation.
  • Robert F. Kennedy Assassination

    Murdered in a Southern California hotel after giving a speech following a victory in CA's presidential primary.
