Sugar Act
The Sugar Act caused sugar to be taxed for a lower rate of three pence. However, it was more strongly enforced. The act required more foreign goods to be taxed. This ended up reducing trade and limiting the colonial economy. A lot of colonists sparked outrage at King George III. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was created to help establish more control for Britain over the colonies. More taxes were created over stamps, parchment, paper, calendars, etc. The colonists were becoming enraged even more over the taxes imposed upon them from Great Britain. -
Tea Act
It was created to help the East India Company. The act was opposed by colonists due to believing it validated the Townshend Tax. Colonists were once again upset with King George III. -
Boston Tea Party
Due to the taxes being required for the tea, colonists dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. The colonists wanted to send a message of King George III. -
First Continental Congress
The first Continental Congress met in Philadelphia. It ended up deciding to decline importation of goods from Britain unless parliament rescinded the Intolerable Acts. This was their attempt to resolve issues with Great Britain. -
American Revolutionary War Began
The British attempted to disarm the Massachusetts militia. It resulted in both sides firing and began the American Revolutionary War.This began the end of the reign of King George III over the colonies. -
Commander in Chief
George Washington is named the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. This began the path that led him to become a leader in the new political era for the colonies. -
Declaration of Independence
The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence which is what the United States of America follows to this day. It was the foundation for our government. -
Treaty of Paris
The United States and Great Britain signed the Treaty of Paris. This ended the reign of Great Britain over the United States. -
1st President elected
George Washington is elected and inaugurated as the 1st President of the United States.
