In 10000 BC Egypt, cosmetics were used for hygiene as well as beauty. Egyptians used cosmetics to soften their skin and mask body odor. These cosmetics were made of ground up herbs, oils, and lotions. -

Minerals used for color
Egyptian women started using minerals such as copper, ore, and malachite to color their faces. This is when they developed kohl, a combination of burnt almonds, copper, lead, ash, and ochre, to adorn their eyes. Cosmetics began being used for beauty more than health. -

Different Methods develop
In Elizabethan England, methods develop to whiten faces such as egg whites and rice powder. -
More extreme methods develop
Women use mixtures of copper and lead to paint their faces white. When it is discovered to be toxic later in the 1800s, they switch to zinc oxide. -
Better and New makeups
In the 1920s, Max factor developed lip gloss and eyebrow pencils. Mabel wiliams developed eyeshadow out of coal dust and petroleum jelly distilled into a powder form. "Kissproof Lipstick" entered the market. -
Modern Makeup
Today we have many different types of makeups. Our makeup is regulated and follows health and safety regulations. We have develed powders, liquids, eyeliners, mascara, eyeshadow. It comes in different styles and for different purposes. We have matte lipsticks and waterproof mascaras. Not only do we use waxes, oils, pigments, and minerals but we still use insects to make certain types of cosmetics.
