  • The original Playstation

    Playstation first appeared in Japan on December 3rd, 1994. A year later it was released world wide. Just in time to compete with two other gaming consoles, Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64. (Playstation, n.d.)

  • PS One and Playstation 2

    In 2000, the PS One was released as the cheaper alternative to the Playstation 2 that came out at the same time. Playstation 2 is one of the best selling gaming consoles of all time. PS2 was credited as being a major driving force behind the popularity of DVD as a movie medium.(Henderson, 2023)

  • PS2 updated

    In 2004, Playstation came out with a quieter, smaller, and thinner version of the PS2, called the Playstation 2 Slimline. This version was improved with the addition of a ethernet port.(Henderson, 2023)

  • Playstation 3

    Playstation released offical concept art for the PS3, which received a lot of criticism for the "boomarang" like design of the controller. The company decided to ditch the controller design, but stuck with the design of the console itself. The PS3 was released with backward compatibility and 20GB and 60GB drives and sold 81,639 units in the first 24 hours in Japan.(Henderson, 2023) It then went on to sell 600,000 units in the first 2 days of its release to the rest of the world.

  • PS3 Slim

    Playstation continued with the trend of "slimming down" with the Playstation 3 Slim in 2009. This version was smaller, lighter, quieter, cooler and used less power. (Henderson, 2023)

  • PS4

    In 2014, the Playstation 4 was released. This time with even more enhancements like processing power, support for HDR10 video, and 4K resolution playback. (Henderson, 2023) PS4 managed to sell 100 million units since its launch.

  • The launch of PS5

    Playstation 5 was released in 2020, and is the newest gaming console produced by Sony. The PS5 can come as the standard model, or the Digital Edition which doesn't include a disc drive. Some of it's many advancements include AMD CPU and GPU technology which makes for a gaming machine offering 4K gaming at 60FPS and even up to 120FPS with the right support. (Henderson, 2023)
