-
PlayStation 1
- was first released in Japan on December 3, 1994
- They used CDs instead of cartridges like Nintendo did for their Nintendo 64 console
- The PS1 had had several models, one looked and functioned like a small computer.
-
PlayStation 2
- Immediately after the release of the PS2 they discontinued the PS1
- This console has the most unit sales of any console ever made
- Because the PS2 was such a hit, they continued it even after the release of the PS3
- This was also the first modern console to have backward compatibility
-
PlayStation 3
- The PS3 was sold for less than it took to make.
- The price for extra storage made it go from around $350 to $600
- The PS3 was the first console to have Blue-Ray support, meaning it could play movies, and it was now possible to rent video games. Consoles down the line would follow this trend.
-
PlayStation 4
- The PS4 was the first console to not have backward compatibility. They removed it because of the uprise of online streaming.
- They sold a stand for it to sit vertically. This would later be remedied by the PS5 design
- The PS4 had a handheld version called the PSVita
-
PlaySation 5
- With the ninth generation of consoles, you now have to pay a subscription to play online, and the PS5 is no exception.
- They don’t have SD cards for extended storage, they use hard drives instead, unlike other consoles.
- The PS5 also had a VR variant like the PS4 did, called the PS VR2
