    A 1991 collaboration between Sony and influential company Nintendo led to the creation of the first PlayStation. At the time, the Mario family commissioned Sony to create a CD-based add-on system for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

    The PlayStation 2, which was able to surpass the first console in almost every respect. Sony's 2000 product line embraced the multimedia experience by supporting DVDs. This was significant because the PS2 at the time really became one of the more affordable DVD players available.

    Sony opted to release the PlayStation Portable (PSP), the first handheld in PlayStation history, between the PS2 and PS3 debuts back in 2004. Sony applied a brute-force strategy with the PSP by providing a processor that was more akin to the Dreamcast and PS2, in contrast to Nintendo and its conservative approach to handheld capability. This led to numerous ports of current home console games.

    Sony Interactive Entertainment produced the PlayStation 3 (PS3). It was made available in November 2006 in Japan and North America, then in March 2007 in Europe and Australia. Due to its cutting-edge visuals, motion-sensing controller, network capabilities, and impressive selection of games, it was the most advanced video game console available when it was first released.

    The PlayStation Vita, released by Sony as a follow-up to the PSP in 2012, has a strong case for being one of the most technologically advanced portable gaming consoles ever. The Vita made a great impression thanks to its stunning OLED screen, two analog sticks, and stylish design.

    Sony seems to have learnt from the PS3 because the PS4 came in 2013 with a reasonable $399 price tag and mainly standard hardware. The AMD APU for the PS4 has an eight-core Jaguar-based CPU, proprietary AMD graphics, and eight gigabytes of GDDR5 RAM. The Xbox One and this were essentially identical, however Sony's console had more powerful AMD graphics and faster RAM.

    The PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro were later introduced by the Japanese corporation in 2016, with the former featuring a slimmer, more compact design. With significantly higher CPU clock rates, improved graphics, and support for 4K gaming (using so-called checkerboard rendering), the latter raised the ante.

    The PlayStation 5 from Sony, released in 2020, signified yet another significant advancement in technology. The CPU in the PS4 was its weak point because it was designed with budget tablets and netbooks in mind. With the PS5, however, Sony significantly improved things with to an octa-core AMD Zen 2 CPU, RDNA2 graphics, and 16GB of GDDR6 RAM.
