    In the 90s is when Sony decided to partake in the gaming industry. PlayStation was first launched in Japan on December 1994 and in the U.S. in September 1995 (Anyfantis, 2023). Sony partnered with Namco and Konami as their third-party developers and revealed the original home console (PlayStation) at their first-ever Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 1995

    In 1977, a rumor started that a new machine that could play DVDs and connect to the Internet was out. Sony confirmed the rumor in 1999 at the Tokyo Game Show and revealed the launch would transpire a few months later.

    Due to the success in sales of the original PlayStation, the fan base for the brand was solid. When the PS2 launched in 2000, the sales figures had surpassed the millions of units, shelves were empty, and consumers were spending thousands of dollars through online purchases just to find one (Anyfantis, 2023). New features included were a DVD player, bigger storage compatibility, and it was cheaper than other game consoles such as Microsoft Xbox, The Nintendo Gamecube, and the Sega Dreamcast.

    Sony launched two editions- 20GB and 60GB storage capacity, each with certain features. A "Slim" version was also developed a few years later. The DVD player could now play blue-ray discs, and the PlayStation 3 was capable of reading the PS1 and PS2 discs.

    Announced at E3 in 2005, due to the high price compared to the previous consoles, consumers were skeptical of the PS3. The console was the first to have wireless controllers, and players could purchase games digitally through the PlayStation store and store them on their console's hard drive. The PS3 sales were not nearly as close to the previous model consoles.

    Development started in 2008; Sony called it the next and most powerful console to date. Additional features for the console included players interacting with one another, creating social groups based on their interests and events, ability to form parties and play together while communicating via headsets. Players can also live stream or watch other players worldwide play their games and communicate with them.

    In February 2013, Sony announced the PS4 at an event and the console was released on November 15 to the U.S. and Canada, and the rest of the world on November 29 of that year. Consumers were waiting outside the stores for hours on the release dates, while online sellers were already out of stock days and weeks before the launch. The main reason for the success of PS4 sales is the online capabilities and the marketing campaigns (Anyfantis, 2023).
  • PlayStation 5 (PS5)

    Released in 2020 is Sony's latest console, PS5. The most significant upgrade from the PS4 is the storage space. This enables lightening fast loading times in games. The PS5's horsepower delivers 4k gameplay and smoother performance. Sony also announced an "all-you-can-eat" subscription for gaming services in March 2022 (Simons, 2023).
