    Charles Darwin (February 12th, 1809 -- April 19th, 1882)
Darwin departs on the HMS Beagle for what was supposed to be a two year voyage to survey sites around the globe. Darwin made arrangements to accompany the voyage, although he would not be paid to do so. His main concern, which he successfully negotiated for, was that the specimens he would collect would belong to him to give to museums, and not to the British government. He was concerned that the Royal Museum would take to long to catalog his collection and release it to the public.

    Charles Darwin (February 12th, 1809 -- April 19th, 1882)
Darwin and the HMS Beagle return to England. The 2-year expedition ended up taking 5 whole years. In this time period, the Beagle circumnavigated the Earth, and Darwin spent more than 3 years on expeditions in land while the ship was in port. He collected fossils, specimens of insects and birds, and more for his collections. The specimens that he collected in this time period led him to consider that species were not static and eventually helped him to develop his theory of evolution.

    Charles Darwin (February 12th, 1809 -- April 19th, 1882)
Darwin publishes On the Origin of Species, bringing the theories of evolution and natural selection to the public at large. The specimens and fossils he collected while aboard the HMS Beagle over 20 years prior helped him to develop his theories, but he did not publish them for personal reasons for a long period of time. Charles Darwin (February 12th, 1809 -- April 19th, 1882)
Darwin publishes The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, which builds on his previous works in evolution and natural selection. At this point in history, the original theories that Darwin published in 1859 were considered to be accurate by most of the scientific community around the world. Darwin, Charles, 1809-1882.
