French Directory
The French Directory was the 5th government to rule in France during the Revolution. The processes of how the government was to be managed were outlined in the Constitution of 1795--there were to be five directors along with the Council of Five Hundred and 250 "ancients", the two sections of the legislature. The middle class ruled the nation during this form of government. There were conflicts such as a conspiracy and plans to turn France back into a monarchy. It represented the people of France -
Napoleon’s coup d’etat of 18-19 Brumaire
On Novemer 9-10, 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte overthrew the existing French government to get power for himself. Originally, Emmanuel Sieyes was planning on getting the power, and Napoleon was part of the plan. However, Napoleon reversed this coup into a scheme to get power for himself. On the 9th, some of the Directors resigned. On the 10th, Napoleon walked in on the Council of 500, taking away their and the Directory's power. The coup represents the turmoil and instability the Revolution led to. -

Concordat of 1801
Napoleon and Pope Pius VII together signed the Concordat of 1801. It gave citizens of France the right to worship as they pleased, but Napoleon agreed to categorize Catholicism as the nation's primary religion. It emphasizes a very important Enlightenment principle essential to the goals of the Revolution. Napoleon took away lands belonging to the Church, and the government and Church would work together to select priests and bishops. -
