  • Peter Begins Ruling

    Peter Begins Ruling
    May 7, 1682, Peter shares the throne with his half-brother, Ivan V, both ruling Russia.
  • Peter Now Rules Alone

    January 26th, 1696, Peter becomes the sole ruler of Russia, being known as one of Russia's greatest reformers.
  • Peter Visits Western Europe

    January 1st, 1697, Peter begins his journey to Western Europe, concluding that Russia would compete with Europe on military and commercial terms. He used Western Europe as an idea for change to make Russia stronger.
  • The Great Northern War (Russia & Sweden)

    January 1st, 1700, Peter fights Sweden to gain a piece of the Baltic Coast and finally won after many years of war.
  • Initiation of St. Petersburg

    Initiation of St. Petersburg
    January 1st, 1703, Peter begins building his new city, St. Petersburg, on the Swedish lands that are occupied by Russian troops. This seemed very ideal to Peter because ships would be able to sail down the Neva River into the Baltic Sea and on to Western Europe.

    February 22nd, 1711, Peter abolished the Boyar council and created a new state body, the Governing Senate that had 10 members, everything being determined by Peter's laws and agreements.
  • Emperor Of All Russia

    1721, Peter announced that Russia was an empire and was given the title, Emperor of All Russia, and "the Great."
  • The Table Of Ranks

    January 24th, 1722, Peter introduced the system, the Table of Ranks, which was a list of ranks in Russia's military, government, and court of Russia. This improved and organized the social aspect in Russia that allowed people to become recognized.
  • Persian Campaign

    1722-1723, the Persian Campaign came to an end with Persia surrendering the western and southern shores of the Caspian to Russia in return for military aid. Because of this, Peter ended up expanding the territory of Russia making it into a larger empire.

    February 8th, 1725, Peter died without nominating an heir.
