Peter the Great is born on May 30th, 1672 in Moscow, Russia. he was the 14th kid of russian czar Alexix and his second wife Natalya Kirillovna Naryshkina. This is significant because Peter will be known in history as
Peter the Great because he was one of Russia's best czars who ruled from 1696-1725. (Coffmon 103) -
The first weather map
Edmond Halley created the first weather map. This is significant because we still use weather maps today so keep people informed about the weather and to keep people safe. -
The theory of universal gravitation
Iaasac Newton discovered gravity while sitting under an apple tree. He created a therory explaining how gravity works. This is significant because it sparked many new ideas and gave people a much better understanding about how the world works. -
Salem witch trials
The Salem witch trials occurred in colonial Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft and 20 were executed. This is significant because it is part of our history and shaped massachutes as a colony. Stories are still told about it and you can visit salem and learn more about it. -
Peter becomes Czar
Peter ruled jointly with his brother Ivan V from 1682, when Ivan died in 1696, Peter was officially declared ruler of all Russia. He inherited a nation that was severely underdeveloped compared to other, modernizied European countries. Peter focused on the development of science and educateing his people about technological advancements. This is significant because this was the start of Peter's rule, he was already changing Russia for the better. (Rice 69) -
Peter travels to Europe
Peter travelled to Europe in 1697–98 to study new developments in technology, especially shipbuilding. Most czars didnt do this and it made Peter different from other czars. This is significant because it was Peter's first steps to modernizing Russia. (Crossman 106) -
Peter Creates first russian navy
Peter officially founded the first Russian Navy base. He spent years studying ships and sailing and decided that buliding a navy would also help modernize russia and help with the armies., This is significant because building a navy made Russia stronger and allowed Peter to expand the empire during the Great Northern wars. (Crossman 73) -
Peter takes Narva
Peter led his forces to Narva, Sweeden and fought for the mouth of the Narva river. This was a military victory for Peter and his men. This is significant because by gaining this land Peter had access to more trade routes on the water and it is where he would soon establish St. Petersberg, (Encyclopedia of World Biography 253) -
Peter makes St. Petersberg the capital
After the Great Northern war Peter the Great established St. Petersberg on the Narva river and then moved the Russian capital there. This is significant because it secured russia's settlement in the baltic sea and church's and schools were put in the city. It was Russia's "window to europe" and trade flourished. It expanded Russia and helped modernize the empire. (Rice 71) -
Russian victory at the Battle Gangut
The battle was between the Swedish Navy and Imperial Russian Navy. It was the first important victory of the Russian fleet in its history. This is significant because for every battle Russia won during the Great Norther wars helped them expand the growing empire. (Crossman 106) -
First novel
Defoe is known for being one of the earliest writers of the novel, as he helped to popularise the form in Britain, and, along with others such as Samuel Richardson, is among the founders of the English novel. This is significant because the writing of the first novel helped devolope different styles of writing throughtout the years to come. -
Signing of the Treaty of Nystad
The Treaty of Nystad ended what became known as the Great Northern War. It ended the fighting for different parts of europe and russia had expanded the empire greatly. This is significant because now that the war was over Peter and his new, bigger, modernized, empire could focus on other things to make it better. (Rice 74) -
Peter becomes emperor
After the northen wars Peter crowned himself Emperor of Russia and was able to spend more time helping russia grow as a nation. This is significant because this gave Peter more time to spend on making Russia a better place and it also marked the end of the Northen wars. (Encyclopedia of World Biography 254) -

Europeans discovered easter island and went on many expoditions to explore and learn more about it. This is significant because they helped us learn more about the island and discovered many new things. -
First mercury thermomater
Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first mercury thermometer, the modern thermometer. This is significant because it modernized the world back then and we use those type of thermomters today. -
Peter the Great dies
In November 1724 he leapt into freezing water to save drowning soldiers, he died of a fever from a fever contracted from jumping into the water and died Janurary 28, 1725 in St. Petersberg Russia. This is significant because there was a fight between who would become ruler since he changed the rules of succesion saying the ruler shall choose the next czar, however he did not do this so after 15 years of fighting his only direct decendant Elizabeth siezed the throne.
