Early Childhood
I can't say that I have vivid memories about reading as a young child, but I do recall my love for writing letters...especially writing my name, which I would do on many of my toys! -
Elementary School Read Aloud
Elementary school was when that I loved Read Aloud time. I especially recall my fifth grade teacher who would read to us after we came in from recess. A favorite story was Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. -
Elementary Independent Reading Favorite
Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself was an all time favorite book that I would read again and again. -

Writing Time
It was in 7th grade that I learned the power of writing and how therapeutic it could be. It was a challenging family time due to a severe car accident that left my sister hospitalized. My 7th grade English teacher had us write in journals each week offering a writing prompt or free writing. That journal became a place where I could express my feelings and my creativity. It was non-judgemental, safe, and offered a much needed outlet at the time. -

High School Era
In high school my reading and writing shifted. I do not recall reading for "pleasure," but instead for information. -

Spanish Literature
My literacy exploration shifted again in college when I became a Spanish major. At this time, I explored literacy in Spanish which not only covered the language but Spanish literature as well. -

Teaching Spanish at Montessori School
Teaching Spanish at a Montessori school was a great opportunity to teach and explore Spanish through books, not merely teaching the language through translation. A highlight for everyone was when we read La Casa en Mango Street with my middle schoolers. -

Reading with my children
A huge part of my literacy experience with now with my children. We read constantly. As a little girl, my older daughter LOVED when I would read to her. I remember reading the Disney fairy books to her in one sitting, as my younger daughter was napping. Interestingly, my younger daughter never enjoyed reading with me... -
