    Iraq Invades Kuwait
    Led by Saddam Hussein, the leader of Iraq at the time, Iraqi troops invade the small country of Kuwait. These actions are justified by Iraq through alleged stealing of petroleum on the part of Kuwait.
  • The United States and Saudi Arabia Meet

    King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and the Secretary of Defense during the George H. W. Bush administration, Richard Cheney, meet. King Fahd requests military assistance from the US to help with the pending crisis in Kuwait. Iraqi forces were become more prevalent in the area.
  • Operation Desert Shield

    Operation Desert Shield
    On this day, George H. W. Bush ordered the Operation Desert Shield. This was an acceptance to Saudi Arabia's request of military aid in the area. In this Operation, about 500,000 United States trooped were stationed in Saudi Arabia.
  • Iraqi Forces Refuse to Withdraw from Kuwait

    January 15, 1991 was the deadline the UN had set for Iraq to remove all military force and leave Kuwait. Iraq refused to retreat. This called for military force on the Allied side to soon be used.
  • Operation Desert Storm

    Operation Desert Storm
    In response to Iraq's refusal to retreat from Kuwait, the United States swiftly started military attacks on Baghdad, led by Commander-in-Chief General Schwarzkopf. These attacks came in the forms of massive bombings in the middle of the night. This attack began the warfare between Iraqi troops and US troops, which had been led up to for 6 months.
  • Amiriyah Shelter Bombing

    Amiriyah Shelter Bombing
    The Amiriyah shelter was where another demonstration of military force by the US was used. On this day, a massive airstrike over the shelter killed over 400 people. This was due to the United States stating that it had been a military command center.
  • VII Corps Attacks

    Ground operations began to push Iraqi troops out of Kuwait. The US troops marched to move the military out of the area towards the Iraq border. This took about 100 hours to successfully move all forces out.
  • Iraqis Flee Kuwait

    After proving successful in moving most troops out of Kuwait, the US had one final task. They had to take down Saddam Hussein's guard line, which was defending the capital. The US accomplished this and made all Iraqi troops flee Kuwait.
  • Cease Fire

    After a long period of fighting, the US troops proved successful. All of the Iraqi troops were moved out of Kuwait. At this time, General Schwarzkopf calls a cease fire.
  • Schwarzkopf Meets with Iraqi Officials

    Schwarzkopf Meets with Iraqi Officials
    Schwarzkopf met with Iraqi officials to discuss terms of peace. While this was a decisive coalition victory, Kuwait and Iraq still suffered major damage, in physical and government aspects. This caused much tension, with the suppression of uprisings against the current rule in Iraq, as well as the decision that Iraq would be a no fly zone, monitored by the US and Britain. Tensions continually rose, which ultimately led to another war in the region, beginning in 2003, known as the Iraq War.
