conflict of the first of the two Balkan Wars (1912–13). Adrianople was one of the largest cities in the Ottoman Empire. When the Bulgarians stormed the city in the First Balkan War, it seemed they would become the predominant power in the Balkans and that the Turks might be evicted from European soil. One of the earliest uses of airplanes for bombing (in this case dropping hand grenades from the air) occurred during this conflict. -
