happened at fords theater. john wilkes booth shot him. it was not just an attack on the preseident of the united states, there was an attempted assassination of the secretary of state as well. -

this is considered the end of reconstruction because a new era was starting in the united states and ost of the country was far along in rebuilding after the civil war.
