WWII official ends
With WWII officially ending, both the US and Soviet Union were kick to try to grab lots of land. The US started to get involved in Vietnam's government in hopes to add it. The government was quick to decieve Americans about their true intent with Vietnam. -
Papers are ordered
Defense Secretary Robert S McNamara requested a information on all of the US interaction with Vietnam. He wants an "Encyclopedic and objective" research of all events from the end of WWII until present day. -
Copies are made
Daniel Ellsberg begins to break into the Pentagon at night in order to make copies of the Pentagon Papers that he help compiled. He planned to give this information to the New York Times becasue he felt that the information needed to be made public. -
Times Prints the First Article
After using the information that Ellsberg gave to the papers, the New York Times was able to print its first article on the US involvement with Vietnam. Many people were disapointed that the US government had been lying to them. -
Books are printed
Soon after the first article was printed, the Times was also able to pump out a condensed version of the Pentagon Papers. The book quickly sold because many people wanted to know what was really happening. -
Minds Change
With the printing of the newspaper articles many people who were on the fence about Vietnam soon were antiwar. These feelings eventually led to the exiting of Vietnam.
