New Mexico Utah became slave states. Slave trade was banned in Washington DC, the Fugitive Slave Act came. This helped prelude to the Civil War as it failed to resolve the slavery tension, just postponed it; resulting in people's beliefs/feelings becoming stronger than ever (ex: Underground Railroad). -
Uncle Tom's Cabin Published By Harriet Stowe

For many, this began shaping strong opinions against slavery. This helped prelude to the Civil War as tensions grew stronger. -
Congress Passes Kansas-Nebraska Act
(Photo Credit: History On the Net) DESCRIPTION: This was a law passed by Congress that repealed the Missouri compromise and made residents of Kansas Nebraska able to decide on slavery policies using popular sovereignty. This helped prelude to the Civil War as it caused the formation of the Republican party and began violent conflicts like "Bleeding Kansas." -
Dred Scott Decision
(Photo Credit :Britannica) DESCRIPTION: The Dred Scott decision was a court case taken to the Supreme Court to decide whether or not Dred Scott should gain freedom based on living in free lands. Dred Scott was not granted freedom. The court ruled that Blacks were not US citizens couldn't sue in federal courts. This helped prelude to the Civil War as it spurred up many strong feelings about slavery, many believing the court ruling was unjust should have been protected by the 5th Amendment. -
Lincoln Becomes President

He was the first Republican president and strongly believed in abolishing slavery and anti-slavery policies. This helped prelude to the CIvil War as the South was very alarmed by his victory over the presidency and spurred many to take action or speak up against the union. Lincoln was very committed to the North and created unity in the Union. He played a big role in the Civil War. -
