Measurments intended to settle isagreements between free states and slave states. It did not work. It did not cover new states. It angered the south. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The law that was passed that provided harsh treatment for escaped slaves. Also for those who helped slaves. After this was passed the north passed a law that let slaves stay free. -
Personal liberty laws
Law passedd by the north forbidding the imprisonment of escaped slaves. It angered the south because it was the oppostie of the Fugitive Slave act. -
Uncle toms cabin
Was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was an anti slave novel. It caused an uproar in the south. People were angered by it -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The lae that split nebraska into two territories. They allowed popular soverignty there. Pro slavery settelers came and tried to get them to be slave states. But the people living there did not want to become slave states so here was fighting. -
Dred Scott case
Scott was a slave that was escaped to a free territory. The court ruled on the decison that blacks could not become citizens. -
Lecompton Constitution Rejected
the Lecompton Constitution was created allowing for Kansas to be a slave state. Pro-slavery forces supported by President James Buchanan attempted to push the Constitution through the US Congress for acceptance -
Freeport Doctrine
Idea that any territory could ban slavery by refusing to pass laws supporting it. It angered many southern democrats. It caused them to want to leave the union. -
Raid on Harpers Ferry
John brown broke into an amrory and took guns and gave them to 20 slaves. They tried to form a revolt. But they were taken down quickly. -
Abraham Lincoln elected
Abe lincoln got elected a president of the union. He was a rebublican. The sotherners thought he would try to abolish slavery.
