When do we use it?
In general, we use it for actions that have occurred before another action in the past. -
COMPONENTS
SUJECT (I, you, he, she, it, we, they), AUXILIARY (had), CONTRACTION (I’d, you’d, he’d, she’d, it’d, we’d, they’d) and PAST PARTICIPLE (studied, visited, worked…) -
FORM AFFIRMATIVE
Suject + “had” + past participle… -
EXAMPLE
--> I had visited the Louvre before, so I knew where the Mona Lisa was -
FORM NEGATIVE
Suject + “had not" + past participle -
EXAMPLE
--> They had not studied English before they went to London -
FORM INTERROGATIVE
“Had not" + Suject + past participle? -
EXAMPLE
--> Had you ever flown before the trip to France?
