    Exploration Of Africa

    Exploring Africa was a difficult task for explorers. The land had alot of obstacles like dangerous animals, land barriers, and native people. The more they had explored Africa the more they knew about it. Explorers were also affected by disease.

    Age of Exploration

    Before the exploration Africa and Asia had no limits. They only had Europe Africa and Asia. This was the known world at the beginning of the middle ages. Some explorers were Magellan Columbus Marco Polo Cook Vespucci. People believed that there would be riches and paradise in the land they did not know about, but they were also scared of myths created about the unknown part of the world.

  • Asante

    Asante extends from the Comoé River to the Togo Mountains.
    In the 18th and 19th centuries it controlled present day southern Ghana. They supplied slaves for British and Dutch traders. Received firearms to help their expansion. They got their money from trading gold and slaves. Took military risks which gained them land but lead to their downfall. Became a British protectorate in 1902.

    Industrial Revolution

    Before the revolution people had to make everything by hand. As long as there were raw supplies factories could make lots of product. Arkwright invented the modern factory by creating a way to mass produce fabric. There were increases in health, literature, jobs, and social mobility. There were factories with bad conditions, crowded cities, but there were other benefits that made up for it.
  • Arkwright’s water frame

    Richard Arkwright created the water frame. It was a spinning machine powered by water, it produced cotton yarn. Improved speed and quality of product.
  • Origin of Species

    Charles Darwin wrote a book called Origin of Species. The book explains Darwin’s theory of evolution through natural selection. His findings were based off of his research while on a ship called the Beagle. When he returned to London Darwin came to the conclusion that plants and animals evolved through natural selection. These findings were published in 1859 in his Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection, this book caused lots of controversy and tested many religions.
  • Social Darwinism / Survival of the fittest

    The theory that people, groups, and races are affected by the same laws of natural selection as animals and plants in nature.
    This theory was based on Darwin’s ideas about natrual selection.
    "Survival of the fittest” was believed to affect humans those who were fit were sucessful and reporduced. If you had money or were sucessful you were considered fit.

    Partition of Africa

    Europe started this with a meeting in Berlin. The idea of the Partition was to bring civilization to all the colonies in Africa. Countries in Britian were given colonies in Africa and their job was to bring trade, people, and christianity to the colonies they were assigned.
