Some people thought that damp night air caused yellow fever and malaria. But Cuban doctor, Carlos Juan Finlay, discovered that yellow fever was transmitted by some kind of mosquito. -
Struggles With Building the Canal
Dieases like Yellow Fever and Malaria was reduced and was caused by mosquitos.The workers had to cut through mountains, dam a river, and erect the canal's giant locks. They also had to get rid of the brush that was in the way of where the canal is being built. -

Yellow Fever was wiped out and Malaria was reduced by William C. Gorgas. Gorgas dd this by had workers clear brush and drain swamps where mosquitos live. President Theodore Roosevelt traleled to Panama, becoming he first United states President to travel abroad while in office. -

The Panama canal was officailly opened and the Atlantic and Pacific were joined. The world scarcely noticed the canal. -
