The forst obstacle to building the canal was not and engineering problem, it was a disease. Malaria and Yellow Fever were widespread in Panama. Some people thought that damp night air caused yellow fever and malaria. But Cuban doctor, Carlos Juan Finlay, discovered that yellow fever was transmitted by some kind of mosquito.

    The Panama Canal was built in 1914 after a long hard work. The workers suffered disease and may died while working. The workers had to cut through mountians and create locks for the ships to get past. The canal was a success and was notices by many Americans.
